Flags of Our Fathers

Saw this Thursday night. It's very good. Dad told Margaret it was realistic. See it quick. It won't be in the theaters much longer. I think it's important to see it to witness Dad's experience on Iwo Jima.

What is it rated?

How about the kids?

Kids

Well that's tough to say. My quick answer is no, but maybe. It's extremely realistic and is somewhat traumatic to watch specifically because of Dad's presence there. I was shivering with a certain anxiety and passion. This had not occured to me when I saw Private Ryan which had similar traumatic episodes. I think each family would have to decide based on the types of movies they had seen in the past, balanced against the documentarial historical presentation and Dad's personal experience there. It would certainly make all feel the risk and trauma that Dad successfully faced during that long month. I think it's a part of Dad's life that we did not know or certainly didn't understand; probably he shielded us from it, or perhaps he, as most Iwo vets just didn't want to talk about it. Significant discussion of the history and Dad's place in it and the trauma that occurs on the battle field would be appropriate with the kids before seeing the film. But hurry if you want to see it. It's certain to win academy awards but attendance is low so it will be pulled from many theaters soon. Dad, what do you think?
