Easter

Tom and I will make our lamb for a crowd. Where and who wants to get together? Should we do it on our deck or is there a interest/volunteer for another location? Dan, M and D, and all out of towners we will be thinking of you! Chappaqua folks we hope you will come to town! Roberto is bringing tossed salad. Love you!

lamb and mahler

sounds like a great time! i will be thinking of and missing you all!

at least i will listen to Mahler's 2nd symphony in celebration as i did today (just the first movement).

All right

We'll try to listen to the 2nd symphony too to be with you in spirit. Is that the New World Symphony? Why is that significant for Easter? Rebirth? Nieces and nephews and all whereever you are as Pippin's crowd would say "Join Us" for Easter celebration in body and if you can't in spirit. ps Melissa great job in Pippin and Em great job on the flute, alto flute and piccolo.

Mahler's 2nd

Mahler's Second Cymphony is commonly called "the Resurrection". It is funereal in many spots, but the end is very triumphant and uplifting. At one spot about 2/3s of the way through, there is silence , then a crescendo drum roll and a huge cymbal crash--the notes say this was supposed to represent a particular moment in the apocalpse (sp?). there was a time when I listened to a tape of this repeatedly while driving from court conference to deposiitions etc, as one has to do in upstate NY. It was frequently played on classical music stations by Robert J. Lurtsema on Easter morning. If I remember, ESYO played at least the 1st moveemnt while Dan was a member, so he got in the habit of hearing it in my cara t that time, due to our habit of playing recordings of music that the orchestra was playing, to get a feel for the sound by professionals. Dan will recall on our trip to Chicago to check out the school in April 2004, when we left very early Easter morning, and we had to take 2 cars until we reached Rochester, I played it in the car between Schenectady and Rochester, in honor of Easter.

We like doing that too!

Anna and Emily actually feel very attached to the music they play in orchestra and play professional recordings of their music often. We will have to download Mahler's second in honor of Dan and Easter. Speaking of Easter, we will probably be connecting with Tony's parents since we are not hosting this year at our house. They will be happy to have their grandchildren on the holiday. But we will be joining you in spirit!!!!!!!

Lend recording

If you promise to get it back to me by Easter I will lend you our CD of Mahler's 2nd and maybe you can get it onto your computer. It is over an hour long. the recording is interesting because it is conducted by Gilbert Kaplan, an heir to the Hartz pet food business, who became so obsessed with Mahler's 2nd that he studied the score and hired a professional orchestra to play it while he conducted it in Carnegie Hall, or some such hall, for the public. It got reviewed favorably and he has since conducted it many times, although he is not a professional musician and this is the only piece he conducts.

Thanks.

He sounds like an interesting man.
