March 20, 2006, Mission Texas

It is hot down here. Three-thirty finds us in the library, which is cool. We got up early this morning for a second visit to the Santa Anna National Wildlife Refuge. Our target bird was the hook-billed kite. The refuge was quiet this warm morning except for the buzzing of mosquitoes that were the only ones pleased at the absence of wind.

We enjoyed walking on the somewhat dusty trails through Texas ebony and prickly pear past lagoons that collected ducks and waders. We found one new arrival, a brown-crested flycatcher sitting quietly in a tree. We had to study it carefully from different angles to confirm its identity. It seemed to be resting upon its return to Texas.

Two groups of birders joined us in the marsh area. One was an "elder hostel" group from Massachusetts, the second was a tour group organized by the refuge. During our meeting, Chuck noticed a flying raptor. The guide from the refuge immediately identified it as a hook-billed kite. We "ticked" this bird, but wanted a better view. It would come a half hour later when this or another kite returned to soar above us. We noticed its famous "paddle shaped wings" and its big big beak. The views were still not close, but they were as good as can normally be expected of this rare (probably less than 12 in this country) and elusive bird.

We will rest later to beat the heat and perhaps go out again at dusk to seek better views of night flying paraques in Benson park. A cold front is forecast to come through tonight. That is good news. It may get down to 60 this night and 50 tomorrow night. Right now it is about 92.

We hit the road tomorrow, traveling only about 70 miles west to Falcon Lake. There we will seek rare red-billed pigeon, white-colored seed eaters, and wild muscovy ducks as well as more dessert species. The land becomes progressively more arid up river.

Yesterday was a birding holiday. We found a Unitarian church in the town of San Juan east of McAllen. It was a tiny building that had been moved onto a lot in a residential area. We joined about two dozen worshippers. There were about 60 name tags, probably most belonging to "winter Texans" who have returned north.

At camp Chuck painted the tires with a sun screen while Anne did laundry. We then went grocery shopping buying hamburgers and dove bars. Back at camp Chuck cooked the burgers over mesquite charcoal and we enjoyed Sunday dinner. Anne raised the antenna and we found a tv signal, saw West Wing and Law and Order. A big Sunday on the road.

Santos or Vinnick?

Only 2 more shows left. It seems inevitable that Santos will win but the show has not been renewed so this is the end of the line. Patty and I think ER has also outlived its usefulness. Patty likes House, but I can't stand it, and Grey's Anatomy hasn't gotten me yet. Patty tried to watch Commander in Chief, but it stopped showing and I read that it is in trouble too. So, I guess only Reno 911 is the only really good show left.

Reno 911

haha yes i guess Reno 911 is the only really good show left

and the Daily Show with Jon Stewart of course
and then maybe the Colbert Report?? haha

i dont get to watch much tv while im at school, but maybe if i decide to spend the money and get MLB.TV on the internet i can watch baseball games... anyone else interested in MLB.TV? i discovered last year that one subscription can be shared amongst people just by sharing the login and password--i understand the amoralness of doing something like that, but the 80 dollars for the season is a little steep and if we shared amongst family maybe it wouldn't seem so bad??

The little things

I guess we are the only ones who have watched that vile show, Reno 911. I did finally see the Colbert Report and Matt and the New Yorker are right--it clearly is a parody of the O'Reilly Factor.

How can I ignore the threat to your eternal salvation implicit in an admitted ripping off of MLB.TV? This is your father speaking--don't do it. Think Don Cheadle in "The Family Man"; think Thomas More in "A Man For All Seasons"; think Matthew, Mark, Luke and John! Surely I can work an extra hour and send you the $80. How we do in the little things governs how we will do with the greater things which are entrusted to us.

TV

Personally, I'm a CSI finatic. I like all of them. The goth girl on NCIS is cute.

Law & Order

Matt got us into Law & Order: Criminal Intent. We've never watched CSI or any of the other Law & Orders. I began watching a Law 7 Order SVU but that was too nasty. Once the baseball season begins we can then abandon all these toxic shows.

West Wing

Tom, It looks like we will miss the last 2 episodes of West Wing. All we can get with our antenna now are Spanish speaking programs. If you have time and are willing and able could you tape those last 2 shows for me? Our new mailing address is on MH's family list. Thanks.

Therese, we like CSI too.

Hola! como estas?

We once inadvertently hit the SAP button and had to call the cable company to tell us how to get out of Spanish-language programming, so we feel your pain. We always DVR the shows we watch, so we can easily transfer these shows to VCR tape and send them to you.

Thanks

Thanks, Tom. I appreciate it.

Tom, you crack me up!

I laugh every day when I read your contributions. I can just picture you watching the TV with spanish speaking programs.

Thanks, Therese

I'm glad you see the humor--the comments are supposed to be funny, in a self-deprecating way. I find that I often cannot get to the end of a sentence that I am saying without realizing how ridiculous and pretentious I am and then start to laugh. I have found that this annoys some people, however.

I can relate.

It's probably funny to me because I can relate and feel the same way you do. It's good to have fun with it. I think you could write a good, book, also. I think it would be factual, morally correct and humorous.
