19 September - Kingfisher Park

Drive from Cairns to Mossman is a bit like that along California route 1 with mountains on one side and the sea on the other.  A bit more tropical.  We stopped at the Mossman River where fishermen mentioned the crocs.  I said, “a bit of a nuisance?”

They said, “Not really,” but stood back 3 meters from the shore.

We thought this lodge would be low and warm but find it is some 1,200 meters high and cool at night.  The slope to the sea is rain forest.  To the west is savannah.  From here we can visit various habitats and have found such strange creatures as Chowchilla, Kookaburra, and Galah.  Have also encountered Agile Wallaby but so far no big kangaroos.

Tomorrow will take cruise on the Daintree River.  Likely will find more birds and catch first glimpse of a “salty.”
