September 6, 2008 – Eastham, MA

We are departing as the Nor’easter arrives.  First foul weather since we have been at Cape Cod.  We left the Appalachian Trail last week after completing a final section of trail in Maine.  Having finished the entire trail in the states of Maine and New Hampshire, we can say that the hardest is over.  This year’s walks led us to treats of chanterelles and blueberries.  Wonderful.  As always the rugged northern mountains gave great views of themselves.  Fabulous.

Here we enjoyed the company of family and walked along the seashore.  We also enjoyed watching the fall migration of birds.  As luck would have it we found two life birds here, a Mexican (broad-billed) hummingbird that was way off course on migration and a local salt marsh species (saltmarsh sharp-tailed sparrow) that we had never looked for before.

Today we are on the road again, planning to visit relatives and friends en route to Bennington, VT.  There we will establish a base camp with our motorhome for a 150 mile hike on the A.T. from Central Vermont to the Connecticut border of Massachusetts.  We hope the weather will be favorable and will pack warm and cold weather clothing.  This next hike will be with our neighbors and “hiking buddies” providing fine conversation and support.  So, Vermont, bring on the weather.
