    • Restaurant Visit and more...

Kara submitted on January 14, 1970

So our third week at the DFC started off with a fun activity! We went out to a restaurant as a group tonight. Last Friday we met and went through a lecture on traditional restaurant foods and strategies for not overdoing it (removing the bread, etc.) We then chose a restaurant and looked through the menu, preselecting our dishes. It was fun because we got to plan in dessert and we don't really eat any dessert here. We went out tonight and the food was great. I'm having a really good time with all of my new friends. Hopefully we'll be able to keep in touch after the program. In other news...a true-blue celebrity showed up yesterday. Ask me in person because I feel awkward talking about it online (confidentiality.)

    • Midterms in Chicago

Hi everybody! I think the new setup of the website is fantastic - it's a great way for all of us to keep in touch. I hope to be using it to give you all updates on my life in Chicago and I encourage you to do the same (I want to live vicariously also). I've already read all of Anne and Chuck's and Kara's blogs and I like being able to hear about you all from afar. The adventures ahead for Aunt Anne and Uncle Chuck sound exciting - have fun! Right now I'm in the middle of midterms at the U. of C. since crazy midwesterners like to be on the trimester. It's officially the 5th week of the 2nd 10 week (plus a finals week) term of the year. It's a little misleading to be calling it midterm time because in courses such as Organic Chemistry where there are 2 exams during the quarter, as we call it, they are both called midterms, and I took the first this past Thursday and hope to hear about it soon. Thankfully, there is only one final. Similarly, for one of my courses I have 3 papers and just handed in the first earlier today.

I have removed the view permissions settings because they seemed to be getting in the way of publication of blog entries and the like and very little, if anything, was being set as private. Document attachments to forum posts remain private unless you are logged in. If anyone would like to discuss this, please send me an email or give me a call.

Oh, the challenges of retirement in the 21st Century. We have blotched the blog and are trying to figure out how to make this work. This is a test. We arrived in southwest Florida on Tuesday afternoon. Down to shirt sleeves. Our journey was a success, but carrying all our possessions including one car with our RV was a challenge. At least we did not try to drive out while still connected to anything. We drove through a storm in Carolina, but the cold front followed us here. The temperature fell to 50 this morning. We wore a jacket to Caloosahatchee Bay and watched dozens of species of shore and water birds on the mud flats this morning. Yesterday at lunch we gazed at three eagles circling above.

We're on I-95 before dawn. Went to bed at 7 p.m. yesterday, but it was not a short day. We rose at 6:30 a.m., slept in the motor home in our neighbor's driveway. Our tasks were to continue to pack and assemble the Birdmobile, finish emptying and cleaning the house, one last shower, and look at the home where we lived for 23 years. Even empty it looked beautiful. We had to go to storage to leave the last few items that we didn't want to take on our journey. While I finished arranging things in the motor home, Chuck loaded our little Ford Focus with our backpacks and camping gear. Then the bikes went on the rear and the canoe on the top. As we finished, Gen Ray drove by and I called my new friend, Vicky Jones. They watched and helped us hitch the Focus to the Birdmobile. Glen took photos of us fully loaded in front of Springettsbury Aven. and with she and Vicky waving us off, we got on the road by 10:15 a.m.

    • The Second Week

Kara submitted on January 14, 1970

So things have really calmed down here. There's a lot less rushing to lectures and assessments and a lot more just fitting in the exercise we need to do. The day is still long and filled amazingly. For example, today I woke up at 7:30 in order to grab breakfast just before 8 and bring it to a class in the Back Dining Room or BDR. The class was about the importance of strength training while losing weight. It highlighted how it is impossible not to lose some muscle mass and impossible to gain muscle mass while losing weight so strength training is extra important in order to just maintain one's muscle as much as possible. whew.

    • How to Add Photos to your Blog Entries

MarkD submitted on January 14, 1970
      DSCN0739_0.JPG

The process of uploading photos is simple. If you are signed in, you should be able to click on "content" in the left side bar. That will give you the choice of adding an "image." Follow the directions on the page to upload. At the top of the page under "options," you always have the choice of whether to promote the entry, photo, etc. the front page. The default setting always does this. If you do not choose this option, then your uploaded image will only appear in an image gallery (if you chose to put it there). This "option" works the same way for blog entries and other content....

    • Final Preparations 1/21/06

woodstrehl submitted on January 14, 1970

January 18, 2006 I told Anne today that I haven’t had a day off since I quit work. I need a break. This year so far we have bought a motor home and a car, sold one car, sold a house, moved property into storage and segregated our travel gear (some 600 pounds of it) from everything else in the house that has gone to auction. Today, we began loading the Winnebago Minnie Coach that will be our home for much of the next six months. One accumulates considerable property over 24 years in a large house. It is difficult to part with many things such as large books and crystal balls that make little sense in the confined space of a motor home.

    • DFC

Kara submitted on January 14, 1970

Hello Everybody, I hope you are all doing well. I have had a great time in my first week here at the DFC. Surprisingly enough, because it's no-sodium, but the food is pretty good and you are very well fed. The lack of salt is pretty noticable, as is the incredibly small portion sizes. It really just takes getting used to. I survive by scheduling myself to allow for peanut butter every now and then. I like that you get to plan your own meal. The classes have been very good as well. The main focuses are Fitness, Nutrition, Medical and Behavioral Health. So the approach is really well rounded.
