These strange deposits, called "tufas", are found at Mono Lake, CA. There the water is several times saltier than sea water. The deposits are made up of calcium carbonate and were originally underwater. The city of Los Angeles owned the water rights, and over the years, the depth of the lake was decreased making the tufas visible.
