UN warns of growth in climate change refugees

Hannah Strange Climate change is forcing growing numbers of people in the developing world to flee their homes and seek refuge abroad, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees warned today. Announcing findings that the number of refugees worldwide had risen steeply for the second year running, António Guterres said that environmental degradation induced by climate change was forcing greater displacement as resources became increasingly scarce.

The United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has issued its fourth report (video, audio, and slides here) saying that worldwide carbon emissions must stop increasing within seven years and greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced by 50 to 85 percent in about four decades, The Washington Post reports. Al Gore wins the Nobel Peace Prize

I know Gore is not loved by everyone, but I didn't think I could continue posting articles on climate change without acknowledging the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for their work to disseminate information on the issue. It is an awesome acceptance of the global significance of the problem and that if measures are not taken to understand and mitigate and to face the problem and its solutions, that it will be an issue of international conflict.

The American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment is a program of my organization where presidents and chancellors of higher education institutions promise to make their schools climate neutral. Article below: http://www.union.edu/N/DS/edition_display.php?e=1452&s=7421 The greening of Union: College signs climate pact Union has gone green, officially.

Pope to make climate action a moral obligation

By James Macintyre Published: 22 September 2007 The Pope is expected to use his first address to the United Nations to deliver a powerful warning over climate change in a move to adopt protection of the environment as a "moral" cause for the Catholic Church and its billion-strong following. The New York speech is likely to contain an appeal for sustainable development, and it will follow an unprecedented Encyclical (a message to the wider church) on the subject, senior diplomatic sources have told The Independent.

Global Warming's Toll on the Economy

John D. Podesta speaks to National Association of State Treasures September 17, 2007 First off, I want to thank Oregon State Treasurer Randall Edwards and the conference organizers for helping make today’s event possible. I also want to acknowledge Tate Reeves of Mississippi, who is the President of NAST and Lynn Jenkins of Kansas, who is the senior vice president—thank you both for your hard work and leadership. And thank you all for inviting me—it is a pleasure to participate in this important and timely event.
